HUSKER DU: “New Day Rising” SST LP. Released 24th Oct 2025
For New Day Rising, the follow-up to their breakthrough double-album Zen Arcade, Hüsker Dü replaced concept with conciseness, concentrating on individual songs delivered as scalding post-hardcore pop. New Day Rising is not only a more vicious and relentless record than Zen Arcade, it’s more melodic. Bob Mould and Grant Hart have written tightly crafted, melodic pop songs that don’t compromise Hüsker’s volcanic, unchecked power. Mould and Hart’s songs owe a great deal to ’60s pop, as the verses and choruses ebb and flow with immediately catchy hooks. Occasionally, the razor-thin production and waves of noise mean that it takes a little bit of effort to pick out the melodies, but more often the furious noise and melodies fuse together to create an overwhelming sonic force. It’s possible to hear the rivalry between Mould and Hart on the album itself — each song is like a game of one-upmanship, as Mould responds to “The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill” with “Celebrated Summer.” Neither songwriter slips — both turn in songs that are catchy, clever, and alternately wracked with pain or teeming with humour. New Day Rising is a positively cathartic record and ranks as Hüsker Dü’s most sustained moment of pure power.

Does this Master Room, London cut sound the same as or, dare I say, even better than the 1985 US issue? Hoping (in vain) to find a beefier version of the notoriously tinny sounding K-Disc mastered LP.

Is that all we really have to say about this? Whether or not our copies are vaguely translucent?

Sounds great. Definitely better than the 1990s US repress I’ve got.

I have the receipt inside the album…2/4/85, so it has to be a first pressing OG. But it doesn’t look translucent to me.

I got mine at my local record store in late ’85 or early ’86 which I assume would make it OG (runouts and sleeve are as described here) — it is not translucent.

This album should de remastered. Titles like “Perfect example” and “Powerline” would benefit a lot from it.

I’d say the label colors look light blue and olive. And yes, my copy includes printed inner sleeve.

My copy also includes printed dust sleeve with 2-sided lyrics and a separate 2-sided lyric insert. Also, side b runout includes ☉ symbol: SST-031-B S-13122 I’LL TRADE YOU TWO GOOD SHIRLEYS FOR 10.000 DEAD MIDWESTERN INDIANS ☉ L-19675-X k disc

I now own an original 1985 pressing and one of the recent reissues. I have to admit, I can barely tell a speck of difference. I have tried to compare these things a few separate times. If anything, the reissue might even sound a bit better and beefier. But only by a hair. However, that’s my own experience. Each setup will be different. Either way, I love this album and you will probably never find an ideal pressing due to how it was recorded.
